Mock Trial

Mock Trial is a rigorous, project-based course that introduces high school students in grades 9–12 to the structure of the legal system and the practice of trial advocacy. Students participate as members of a competitive Mock Trial team, preparing and presenting a simulated courtroom case based on official materials. Each year, Teach Democracy (formerly the Constitutional Rights Foundation) releases a fictional case in late summer or early fall. The case typically focuses on criminal law and constitutional issues. Students analyze the case, develop legal arguments, and prepare direct and cross-examinations. Participants assume essential courtroom roles, including prosecuting and defense attorneys, witnesses, clerks, and bailiffs, requiring strong collaboration and commitment from all team members. The course builds skills in critical thinking, public speaking, legal reasoning, teamwork, and professionalism. This course is ideal for students interested in law, government, public speaking, debate, or careers that value strong analytical and communication skills.
